ZechariahSummary of the book:
Zechariah is a challenging book. Some believe that it is the most obscure book of the Old Testament. It is the longest and most difficult minor prophet book. The author of Zechariah is the son of Berechah- Zechariah. He is a member of the priestly family who has returned from exile. The book of Zechariah can be broken up into two large sections. The first section is the prophet's call as well as the 8 night visions and crown for the high priest. The prophet's call happened between October and November of 520 B.C.. The first of the 8 night visions is about 4 horsemen reporting the conditions on earth and God to restore Judah. The second is about 4 horns and 4 craftsmen and God scattering the major power countries. The third, measuring Jerusalem, is about God protecting Jerusalem like wall and multiplying it. The fourth vision is about the filthy high priest that God restores, cleanses and uses as an effective leader. The fifth, golden lamp stand and trees temple is about supernatural blessing in rebuilding. The sixth night vision, flying scroll, is about God judging those who transgress others as well as God. The seventh is the woman in basket where sin is removed from people. The eighth and final night vision is about 4 chariots and how God will judge the nations. The second section of the book is about the 2 visions king/shepherd. There will be judgment on enemies and bad shepherds, a good shepherd rejected, Jerusalem attacked and the pierced leader is mourned. A shepherd is struck, remnant restored, universal rule from Jerusalem as well as a description of annoyed ruler. |
Location: JerusalemHistorical Context: The book of Zechariah occurred during the reign of King Darius around 520-518 B.C.. It was the first generation after the return. There was external opposition as well as internal problems such as their poor and struggling economy.

Applications: There are two major applications of this book. The first is that God's plans are slow, hard, and certain. The second is that God works out history as needed, whether it be for the nation, church, school, ministry, or a specific individual. Our task is to simply trust Him and be faithful.
