The book of Obadiah contains only one book and is the shortest book in the Old Testament. The name Obadiah means "Servant of Yahweh." The book is addressed to Edom, but it is intended to encourage Judah. The book announces God's authoritative judgment on the nation of Edom. This is the end of Edom, which had been in conflict with Israel since the ancient days. The book is spilt into three parts. The first part talks about Edom's pride. They are prideful in their natural defense because it was very good. When they conquered a city they were extremely thorough making sure the city could not be restored. The second part tells of the transgression and offenses of Edom, explaining that they shouldn't have mistreated their brother. The last section is about the day of the lord and how Judah will be restored and Edom destroyed forever. |
Location: EdomHistorical Context: It is very difficult to determine a date for this book. There are two dates that are suggested for when Obadiah was written. The two dates are 586 BC and 845 BC. The edomites were related the Israelites. They were descendants of Jacob's brother Esau and our the Israelites neighbors to the SouthEast. The nation had a history of animosity. They never allowed Israel to pass through them even though they were their relatives. The Edomites land was very valuable and they knew it.

Applications: The major application for this book is that God's plan will certainty come to pass. It may take several years, but he will honor his covenant with his people. Another application from this book is that God will avenge wrongs. He may not do this right away, but he will make sure we may for our sins. God judged Edom for their pride and he will also do the same for us.
