HabakkukSummary of the book:
This book is an unusual book of prophecy. In the book, Habakkuk asks God to deal with sin in Judah, but then he is dismayed at God's troubling answer. He does have faith that God does know best. The book does not have any oracles to God, but instead is a dialogue between the prophet and God. The book is spilt into five different topics; the prophets complaint, God's response, the prophets second complaint, God's response, and the prophets prayer. Habakkuk believed that God was not dealing with the evil so God judges Judah through Babylon. Habakkuk is not happy with this because Babylon is more evil than Judah. God once again responds by saying that He will also judge Babylon because they are also proud and unrighteous. The last part of the book is Habakkuk's prayer for deliverance. He wants God to help Israel like He has done in the past, before this can happen judgment must come. |
Location: JudahHistorical Context: The date of Habakkuk is not given, but we must infer what the date will be. The mention of the battle of Carchemish suggests a late seventh century B.C date. Babylon is already powerful and has expanded. We also know that King Josiah led a revival in 640-609 B.C. After Josiah's death judah quickly went back to their evil ways and Babylon's power continued to rise.

How Can You Apply This To Your Own Life?
Applications: The major question we have to ask ourselves after reading this book is, How do we respond when God doesn't answer us or we don't like the answer? Will we complain to him or will we accept his answer or lack of one and trust that he has a plan for us? Trusting God especially when you don't know what his plan is can be hard, but it is something we need to continue to work on everyday.
