MalachiSummary of the book:
Malachi is the last prophetic voice for four hundred years. The author of the book is Malachi, but we do not know much about it. Malachi’s name means my messenger, which is a very fitting name for a prophet. The book is spilt into six disputes and then the last two verses are discussing the return of Elijah. The six disputes that are discussed are attitudes and actions that are offensive to God. The first dispute is that God’s past actions show that he cares. We need to give God our best. Marry a believer and make it successful. We need to wait for God to right our wrongs. Give regularly and cheerfully in order to be blessed. Trust that righteousness pays off eventually. |
Location: JudeaHistorical Setting: Malachi must be written after 516 BC, because that is when the temple is finished. Malachi is around the same time as Ezra and Nehemiah, all three talk about reforms. Malachi’s and Nehemiah’s are very similar. Both prophets talk about mixed marriages, failure to tithe, social problems, not honoring the Sabbath, and also corrupt priests. The Jews are discouraged at this time because the temple is finally done, but they do not have any glory or power. They want Judea to be the head of nations again and they do not see that happening.

How Can You Apply This To Your Own Life?
Applications: A major theme of Malachi is that God is with us and his past actions show that he cares about us. Another big theme is that we need to trust that God is with us and will continue to do his will with us.
