The Minor ProphetsThe role of the Israeli prophets was one of authority. They were called by God, so they spoke with God’s authority. Since they were called by God, their message was authenticated by God. They were able to predict the future and delivered the message in a few different ways. One way was verbal, so they spoke a message to a crowd in order to get their message across. Another way was that they performed symbolic acts. The last way was that they wrote it out for other’s to read. Israel’s prophets differed from other societies because they gave counsel and encouragement, but they would also rebuke the people for errors that they made. Other prophets would only say what the people wanted to hear. They also were different because they didn’t manipulate the people, but pleaded them to submit to God and His moral sovereign. Another big difference is that they did not offer probabilities, but certainties. They were able to give these because they were speaking for God.
